The 1991-92 SkyBox set ran to 659 cards, one of the largest basketball sets ever made, and its second series carried a run of Team USA cards for the 1992 Olympics: ten players and four coaches. Clyde Drexler's was not in packs at all; it was a mail-away, limited to 10,000.
Larry Bird is #531. He is in the USA uniform, number 7, dribbling, against a computer-drawn field of stars and stripes, with BARCELONA ’92 running up the left side and his name in red at the bottom. The back carries the USA Basketball marks, a close-up from the front photograph and a short quote.
The copy pictured here was signed by Bird after the fact. The card was issued unsigned.
Barcelona was the end. The team won the gold medal, and that August, back home, Bird announced his retirement. His back had been failing him for years.
Barcelona was the last stop. He retired that August.
He went into the Hall of Fame in 1998, and again in 2010 with the rest of the Dream Team.
