Topps cut its football set in 1983 from 528 cards to 396, and kept it at 396 for the rest of the decade. That year 132 of the cards were printed twice as often as the rest. Joe Montana's #169 is one of them.

The design puts the team name across the top in big outlined letters, and on Montana's card 49ERS fills the width. Below it is a thin green frame around the picture: Montana in the helmet and the red jersey, number 16, his mouth open, as if in the middle of a word. His name and QB sit in a yellow box at the bottom. There is no Topps logo on the front.
He has a second card in the set, #4, a Record Breaker for the most consecutive 300-yard passing games by a quarterback.
The set's best-known rookies are Marcus Allen and Mike Singletary.
The backs are red, with a faint helmet behind the text and the card number in a small black football.
