In 1967 Joe Namath threw for 4,007 yards in a fourteen-game season, the first professional quarterback to pass 4,000. The 1968 Topps set followed.
It was the first Topps set in seven years to carry players from both leagues, AFL and NFL together, 219 cards in two series. Number 65 is in the first.
Namath is in the green jersey, number 12, the ball cocked behind his ear, against a pale sky, with the Jets logo in a circle in the upper corner. His name sits in a rounded box at the bottom, NEW YORK JETS beneath it, with QUARTER-BACK on a blue tab to the side.
This was the card in circulation through the 1968 season, and the season ended in Miami. In January 1969 the Jets beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, and Namath was the game's Most Valuable Player.
The card that was in packs the season the Jets won the Super Bowl.
Poor centering is the rule in this set rather than the exception.
