San Francisco took Jerry Rice from Mississippi Valley State in 1985, sixteenth overall. In his second season, 1986, he caught passes for 1,570 yards and 15 touchdowns, and was first-team All-Pro for the first time.
Topps's 1987 set has 396 cards, and Rice is #115. Across the top a pair of flags make the nameplate: 49ERS in white on red, and WIDE RECEIVER, JERRY RICE on yellow, with TOPPS ALL PRO on a strip beneath them.
A wide receiver, photographed with the ball up and looking to throw it.
The photograph is an unusual one for a receiver. Rice, in the red jersey, number 80, is on the move with the ball raised in both hands, looking downfield like a passer, while a defender lies on the turf behind him.
He appears twice more in the set: on the receiving leaders card, with Todd Christensen, and in the 1000 Yard Club insert that came one to a pack.
The backs are a dull red, with the statistics in a shield.
