Topps left Ken Griffey Jr. out of its 1989 set, so this is his first card in the main Topps set, a year late: #336 of 792. It carries the gold Topps All-Star Rookie trophy in the lower corner, an honor the company has handed out most years since 1960.
The 1990 borders are loud, in color combinations that have nothing to do with the teams. Griffey's are blue and yellow, MARINERS runs across the top in orange letters, and he stands in a Mariners jersey, number 24, a bat on his shoulder and the blue cap with the S, with KEN GRIFFEY, JR. on a bar at the bottom.
That season his father joined him. Ken Griffey Sr. signed with Seattle in late August, and on August 31, 1990, the two played together, the first father and son on the same team. On September 14, at Anaheim, they hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.
The season he and his father hit back-to-back home runs.
Griffey made his first All-Star team that summer, hit .300, and won the first of ten straight Gold Gloves.
The famous card in the same set is a Frank Thomas printed with no name on the front.
