On October 7, 1984, against New Orleans, Walter Payton passed Jim Brown's 12,312 yards to become the NFL's career rushing leader. A season later, in 1985, he ran for 1,551 yards, was first-team All-Pro for the fifth time, and the Bears went to the Super Bowl.
On January 26, 1986, at the Louisiana Superdome, Chicago beat New England 46–10 in Super Bowl XX. Payton ran 22 times for 61 yards and did not score; William Perry did, from a yard out.
Forty-six to ten, and no touchdown for Payton. This card came next.
Topps's 1986 set of 396 cards came next. Its borders are green with white diagonal stripes, a football field, around an orange inner frame. Payton's card carries the TOPPS ALL PRO bar, with WALTER PAYTON on a blue panel at the bottom and BEARS on a yellow diagonal. The photograph is a close-up of him in the navy helmet and jersey, number 34.
He has three other cards in the set: a Record Breaker, the Super Bowl XX card and the Bears' team leaders. He announced that year that 1987 would be his last season, and he retired with 16,726 yards.
The green borders chip easily, and centering is a constant problem in this set.
