Before the streak, before the MVPs, before any of it, there was a kid in Charlotte. The 1980 Charlotte O's Police card is the first Cal Ripken Jr. card ever made — issued during his Double-A season with Baltimore's farm club, a full two years ahead of the rookie the rest of the world knows.
It comes in two versions, and the gap between them is enormous. The blue-border issue was handed out in team sets at a game that spring. The orange-border version is the one collectors chase: it was passed out by local police officers, and almost nobody saved it. Graded copies number in the dozens, not the thousands.
The card that exists from before he was the Iron Man — when no one was paying attention yet.
That scarcity is the whole story. It isn't a pretty card and it was never built to last — a minor-league police giveaway that happened to picture a future Hall of Famer no one had heard of. Finding one at all is the achievement. For a Ripken collection, it's the true beginning.
