Topps's 1980 set, 726 cards released in April, was the last it made without competition. In 1981 Fleer and Donruss arrived.
Mike Schmidt's card carries N.L. ALL-STAR under his name. It is a practice-day picture: Schmidt in a maroon warm-up jacket and cap, bat up, with a batting cage behind him, a yellow 3rd BASE pennant at the top, PHILLIES on a purple pennant at the bottom and a facsimile signature across the middle.
The card in the packs the summer the Phillies won the World Series.
The back reports 1979, when he hit 45 home runs. The season the card was sold was better. He hit 48, a record for a third baseman at the time, drove in 121 runs, and was named the National League's Most Valuable Player for the first time.
In October the Phillies beat Kansas City in six games to win the World Series. Schmidt hit .381, with two home runs and seven runs batted in, and was the Series MVP.
It was also the fourth of his eight home-run titles.
