1984-85 Star #195

Star Co. · Card #195 · Jordan in Team USA, before the Bulls

Before he was a Bull he was an amateur in a Team USA jersey, and this is the card that catches him there. The 1984-85 Star #195 comes from the same set that gave the hobby his rookie — the red-bordered Star Company issue — but instead of the Collegiate Record card at #101, this one marks the summer he led the United States to a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. He was twenty-one, and had not yet played a minute in the NBA.

It is a genuine rookie-year card, printed the same season as the #101, and it carries a quieter kind of scarcity. Star sold its basketball in sealed team polybags through dealers and hobby publications, in a print run counted in the low thousands — so a clean, well-centered copy of any Star Jordan is a hard thing to find.

The gold-medal summer, on cardboard — the same rookie season as the #101, in Olympic white.

Condition is the whole game here, as with everything Star made. The colored border shows every touch and the centering wanders, which is why high grades are genuinely tough and prized. For the collector building the full early-Jordan run, the #195 is the amateur chapter the #101 leaves out.
